Stained Glass Wind Chimes

Stained glass wind chimes are one of the most sought after models in a delightful range of glass wind chimes available on the market today. No special skills are required for this dyi project; however, you are going to have to assemble a few specific tools for cutting and drilling purposes.

With that said, let’s get started, shall we? For starters, here are the things you will need in order to make stained glass wind chimes:- copper tape, paper and pen, glass cutter, masking tape, glass oil, fishing line, stained glass, glass drill bit, craft ring, diamond file and running pliers. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s move on to the actual process. Step 1 – First off, you want to decide on the shapes and colors of the glass pieces you prefer for your wind chimes. You can craft lovely models using elongated strips that measure 2 inches in width and seven inches in height. That said, the final choice is yours – if you wish, you may alter the length and width of the strips or opt for shapes such as pentagons or triangles.

You will find single sheets of stained glass available for purchase at your local hardware store. Another option is to order sets of the colored variety by shopping at an online store. Keep in mind that you’ll require a minimum of five segments of these to complete basic stained glass wind chimes. If you prefer though, you could hang many more in a nice, tiered pattern. Next, create a paper template for each individual shape and size of your pieces. With that done, it’s time to get on to Step 2 – Place your template on the glass and trace the outline of it with your grease pencil. Here’s Step 3 – Carefully score the outline of the glass pieces with a glass cutter.

Pistol grip cutters contain oil in the handle that drips onto the surface as you cut. If you are planning on using another type of cutter, make sure you lubricate the area before commencing work, as this’ll help prevent shards and will result in a much cleaner cut. Once you have scored the glass, place the running pliers on the edge and apply sufficient pressure so that it snaps at the score. Then file away rough edges with your diamond file. Step 4 – Cover the perimeter of the glass pieces with copper tape. Thereafter, paste a strip of masking tape on the spot where you intend drilling a hole for the hanging line. Go ahead and drill the hole with glass drill bit, according to the instructions given by the manufacturer.

Tip: Although the masking tape will keep the glass from breaking, it might be a good idea to increase lubrication of the area by adding water on it. We are now nearing the completion of your stained glass wind chimes. Step 5 – Snip off strands of fishing line (one for each segment of glass) into the appropriate lengths for your chimes. You can either make them in a similar length or vary the lengths to create a beautiful design. Thread the line through the hole in the glass and tie a strong double knot.

Next, you want to secure the opposite end of the line onto the craft ring. (The metal version of these rings can be found at your local hobby/discount store.) Finally, fashion a hanger for your chime by tying a piece of fishing line right across the width of the craft ring. That’s it. You have now successfully completed this project!
